Description
This is a print of the cutter, Thalia, as she finds herself in the lee of the Needles during the Round The Island Yacht Race, Isle of Wight, 2013.
Thalia is a Victorian yacht built and launched during 1889 by George F. Wanhill, Poole, Dorset. She is cutter rigged and has gaff sails and is built of oak frames with oak and pitch-pine planking, bronze fastened. In 1889 she was first registered for R. Foley, Commodore of the Royal Cork Yacht Club. She was based in Ireland until around 1914, then she was based on the Thames until 1963.
Thalia is registered with the UK National Maritime Museum and was important for being the oldest yacht to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 2007. The J80 boat on the right is the Royal 5 and is owned by the Royal Yacht Squadron. The original painting, which was sold in 2014, is based on a reference photograph by sailor, writer and marine photographer, Nic Compton.
