Description
Veolia Environnement (skippered by Roland Jourdain) is a Multi One Design (MOD) 70 series trimaran, comprising a central hull, two floats, and crossbeams. The MOD 70 was developed in 2009 and construction of these 70ft trimarans were underway in 2010. By the end of 2011, seven teams representing three nations had committed to the MOD70 circuit and four were launched; Veolia Environnement was numbered MOD70 02 and was launched in June 2011.
The 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race started on Sunday 14th August 2011. Veolia Environnement (sail number FRA02) finished in fourth place (in the multihulls class) to the Fastnet Rock, but finished in first position overall, finishing on Monday 15th August, with a finishing time of 21:06:55. Other multihulls competing were: Race For Water, Gitana 11, Maxi Banque Populaire, Phaedo, Drama Queen, Paradox, Dazzla, Strontium Dog. A record number of 320 boats entered the 2011 Fastnet Race, representing nineteen different countries, with most of the entries from Britain and France.
The Fastnet Race takes place every two years over a course of 608 nautical miles. The race starts at Cowes, Isle of Wight, and leaves The Solent through The Needles Channel. The race follows the southern coastline of England westward, through the English Channel, then goes around Land's End, Cornwall, before crossing the Celtic Sea. The race rounds the Fastnet Rock, located off the south-west coast of Ireland, and then heads south, where the race rounds the Isles of Scilly and then finishes at Plymouth.
In 2014, MOD70 02 was bought by US-based Orion Racing.
The original painting is based on a reference photograph taken by sports photographer, Alex Irwin.
