Artist's Description
This print shows Sophie racing at the 2016 Round The Island Race. Her sail number is 1892L. She was entered into the 2016 Round The Island Race by Nicholas and Liz Harvey and came 2nd position in the Gaffers Division 1 on Saturday 2nd July 2016.
Sophie was originally a Falmouth Quay Punt and was built and designed by W.E. Thomas in Falmouth, in 1892, then she was converted to a yacht in 1912, from gaff yawl in 1920 to cutter, then Bemudan in the 1940's. In 1946 a Morris petrol engine 948cc was installed. In length, she is a little over 32 feet long, with a beam of almost 10 feet. Her rig was returned to gaff cutter in 2006 during a major restoration started in 2001.
The painting is based on a reference photograph taken by professional sports photographer, Alex Irwin.
