Artist's Description
This print features a number of boats competing in the Round The Island Race, held at the Isle of Wight each year.
Strong winds forced organisers to pull more than 70 competitors out of the race. Vessels in the smaller classes were retired before the start, due to increasing winds. The RNLI had to rescue a crew after their small multihull capsized on the north west of the island. Another thirty teams pulled out early due to the tough sailing conditions. First across the finish line, at Cowes, was French trimaran, Actual.
The 81st Round the Island Race, the biggest yacht race in the world, attracted an entry of 1,647 boats, across 25 classes. Only 1,198 crossed the finish line by the 10pm deadline.
The print is reproduced from the original painting which was based on a reference photograph taken by sports photographer, Alex Irwin, in 2012.
